History in Australia
Camp La Salle was founded in Australia in 1990, by a group of committed
De La Salle Brothers, who were supported by former students of Lasallian
schools. Today Camp La Salle has an Executive consisting of Old Collegians
who are dedicated to continuing the program in the same spirit of community
service and still enjoy the support provided by the De La Salle Brothers
Provincialate, Boystown Family Care and associated Lasallian Schools.
Fish La Salle was established by Terence and Mark Farrell, under the guidance
of Br Phillip Sheridan f.s.c. back in August 2001 in Melbourne. They had
the expectation to take students from the three Lasallian schools in Melbourne
fishing on a regular basis.
The Leaders
La Salle Queensland approaches present and former students from Lasallian
schools to undertake the challenging yet rewarding role as a Camp or Fish
La Salle leader. They are usually aged between 17 & 25 years old and
several staff members from Lasallian schools also form part of the La
Salle Leadership team. A key to the continuing success of La Salle Queensland
is the personal approach and relationships that develop between leaders
and students on a one to one basis. This approach ensures that each student
receives a superior level of attention and care.
To encourage leaders to take on the responsibility of running camp activities,
preparation and debriefing sessions are held between the La Salle Executive
and Volunteer leaders.
The Program
La Salle Queensland provides a holiday opportunity for students in Years
7 to 10. The summer camps are held at seaside properties which cater for
up to 40 people and have excellent cooking facilities. Due to their close
proximity to the beach, activities include surfing, canoeing, swimming,
waterslides, fishing, coastal walks, beach games and day trips. Walks,
scavenger hunts and other activities including beach games, video nights
and trips to various places of interest.
Camps and fishing trips usually run for two to four days and students
are collected / returned by bus from / to their respective schools. All
food including snacks are provided on the camp with both students and
leaders having the opportunity to prepare healthy and generous meals during
the camp.
