Lasallian
Inspired by the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Lasallian Youth Ministry encourages all to "share the mission" by offering opportunities to discover fullness of life through Faith, Service and Community.
What is "Lasallian Vocations & Youth Ministry"?
Vocations & Youth Ministry (VOCYM) provides the opportunity for young people to find a place to belong, giving them apostolic options during and after their school years, and a spirituality that supports service to those in need. It aims at empowering young people - either current or former students of Lasallian schools — to work to bring about God's reign in their own hearts and in the hearts of all those whose lives they touch.
How long has it been in existence?
In 1997 a decision was made to combine two important ministries in the district of Australia, New Zealand and PNG: Vocations Ministry and Youth Ministry.
For as long as can be remembered, the district has always had a brother in Vocations ministry who, predominantly, has visited schools to simply invite men to, at least consider the brothers' way of life as an option, as well as running retreats and live-ins fro young people interested in Religious Life and/or Priesthood.
Youth Ministry in our district has been active for a number of years, dating back to the 1960's with camps for disadvantaged students offering volunteer experiences to young people and providing opportunities for retreats for young men and women, among other things.
In the district of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, both of these ministries have had a long and rich history.
What does VOCYM do?
Over the years, considerable expansion has occurred with a more co-ordinated approach to such activities as Camp La Salle, Fish La Salle, Volunteer programs, visits to Lasallian schools, the development of leadership programs, working closely with school leadership teams, and running and assisting in retreats right across the three sectors of our district, involving thousands of young people.
